Amsterdam Symphonic Band

Welcome to The Amsterdam Symphonic Band!

The Amsterdam Symphonic Band

The Amsterdam Symphonic Band is a community band comprised of amateur musicians and art school students from Amsterdam and the surrounding region. The band originated from the Shell Symphonic Band, the concert band of the Royal Dutch Shell Laboratories in Amsterdam. The band is dedicated to performing the best of the symphonic band repertoire.

The Amsterdam Symphonic Band is directed by Vincent van den Bijlaard, a distinguished composer and arranger, assistant director of the Police Band of the Netherlands, and professor at the Amsterdam School of the Arts and the University of Amsterdam. The band is the symphonic band of choice of the Amsterdam School of the Arts and is frequently invited to participate in conducting courses and exams of students in band conducting courses.

Are you in Amsterdam for study or business, and are you looking for a community band to join, to play some good and challenging music, and to meet new people? Look no further!

We invite you to join our band!

Even if it is only for a few months. Most of the Dutch musicians in the band speak English. And because there are already many musicians from other countries in the band, our conductor uses an interesting mixture of Dutch and English during the rehearsals. You will have no problem fitting in!

Rehearsals are held Thursdays from 7 to 9:30 PM in the Huis van de Wijk Waterlandplein, Waterlandplein 302, in Amsterdam.

Feel free to check us out at our next concert (see the right hand column for the announcement), or join us at a rehearsal. Please contact our secretary if you wish to attend a rehearsal.

While we welcome new members for most sections, we are actively seeking players of the following instruments:

  • String bass
  • French horn
  • Tuba
  • Euphonium
  • Baritone
  • Trombone
  • Clarinet
  • Sax
  • Percussion
