The Amsterdam Symphonic Band and the Amsterdam UMC Band in a joint concert on Sunday, November 17!
From October 27, 2024, until the actual date on October 27, 2025, Amsterdam celebrates its 750th anniversary for a whole year. We, as the almost 100-year-old Amsterdam orchestra, Amsterdam Symphonic Band (SHA), also want to contribute to making this period a cultural spectacle.
To give a beautiful start to this, we will perform a concert together with the Amsterdam UMC Big Band on November 17. With this concert, we want to show you the bond between the two Amsterdam orchestras, each with its own unique musical style. The organization of this concert has progressed rapidly, with special thanks to the Big Band for their flexibility. The Big Band has been around for 30 years and regularly performs at conferences, corporate events, and festivals. Their musical repertoire varies from Swing, through 1950s dance music, to Latin and pop hits. These numbers will be vocally complemented by singer Shireen Poelstra. The Big Band leader has been Diederik Ruisch since 2008. In this current double concert of the two aforementioned orchestras, a young promising cellist, Dide Vermeylen, will also take the stage. As a member of the Amsterdam Music School, this aspiring soloist will perform together with our orchestra.
The pre-intermission part will be filled by the Amsterdam Symphonic Band with a somewhat classical repertoire. In this part, Dide will also perform the piece Tramonto. In this, the musical color of the cello will blend with the timbre of a wind band where the string instruments are roughly replaced by clarinets, saxophones, and a large arsenal of brass instruments. The Amsterdam UMC Big Band will take over the part after the intermission. This will be the section where the audience can look forward to wonderful dance music. They will close the evening in swing.
A small selection of the pieces:
- Asgard Symphony No. 1 by Teodoro Apararicia Barbaran. This piece of music tells the story of the Norse gods Thor and Loki, well-known in recent years, especially from Marvel superhero movies.
- Tramonto by Luis Serrano Alarcon, a romantic interplay of a solo cello and a Harmony Orchestra.
- Feeling Good
- I’ve Got the Music in Me
- License to Kill
- Dark Orchid
The concert will take place at the “Willem de Zwijgerkerk”, Olympiaweg 14 in Amsterdam. Concert start time: 20:00 (doors open at 19:30).
The entry fee for this concert is €15.00 for adults. Admission for children under 13 years old is, as is usual for our concerts, free.
We look forward to seeing you on Sunday, November 17, at the Willem de Zwijgerkerk in Amsterdam!
